Crossings are inferred from zone changes. Detection time is not exact passage time. DWT is capacity, not measured cargo. Missing AIS affects coverage.
Latest Sentinel-2 scenes
10 m optical data around Hormuz. Availability depends on satellite passes, processing and clouds.
Copernicus Sentinel data via Element 84 Earth Search. Thumbnails are downsampled previews. The visual GeoTIFF links provide full-resolution data.

What “current” means here
Observation time, model valid time, and collection time are different. Each is labeled. AIS is sampled roughly every 30 minutes. The collector runs twice an hour; scheduled GitHub runs can be delayed.
EUMETSAT metadata is checked when satellite watch opens and every 15 minutes while visible. The image uses an advertised capture time, never an invented current timestamp.
On failure, the last successful snapshot keeps its original timestamp and gains a cached warning. Old data is marked stale. Missing data is never replaced with synthetic traffic.
Understand the limits
AIS is self-reported, sampled, and incomplete. Signals can be missing, delayed or incorrect. This is a commercial shipping observatory, not a navigation service.
Oil estimates come from tanker capacity and model assumptions. They are not direct cargo measurements. A reported zero does not prove no oil moved.
Weather and waves are forecasts, not on-site sensors. Satellite weather images resolve kilometers; Sentinel-2 has finer detail but less frequent coverage. Basemaps are historical mosaics.
